Happy Thanksgiving to Minutive readers everywhere — Gobble Gobble!
I’ve been back-and-forth with authors Andrew Shotland and Dan Leibson about the circular logic of even reporting the #1 ranking factor at all (which sadly has earned many of the headlines I’ve seen).
A more useful takeaway from this extremely valuable study is just how important reviews are for local rankings — including keywords used in reviews — which resonates with my anecdotal analysis over the last few years.
Reports of email’s death have been greatly exaggerated (to say the least). No matter the age group, it remains younger consumers’ preferred channel to receive brand communications by nearly 2:1, and 3:1 over social media.
Few Minutive subscribers work in content-based businesses like Topix, but the lesson from this piece applies to any industry: “pay the platforms for traffic from the get-go and then figure out how to make that traffic profitable.”
Despite my personal affinity for Google’s new public liaison Danny Sullivan, the company’s excuse for News Spam is at least as crappy as the results themselves. If a search is actually best served by long-tail content, then just don’t show Google News results at all.
